Had a lot of fun mixing this song, thanks.
Wir freuen uns sehr, dass du am HOFA XMAS MIX Contest teilgenommen hast und möchten dir hier ein kurzes Feedback geben.
You chose a good volume and spatial placement for the choir but unfortunately, we've noticed that the frequency response of the choir is a bit resonant and unnatural. You should check the energy distribution in the mids in particular as these areas are very important to get a warm and natural sound. The bass area of your mix is a bit too stable and would definitely profit from a little more movement and "pumping“. You can use a fair amount of sidechain ducking / compression to make the bass drum present and the beat more "danceable“. In this way you can get a loud and boomy bass area without these both instruments competing to heavily. This is mainly because the bass is a bit muddy in your mix and doesn't sound quite controlled and defined yet. You should therefore have a look on the EQ-ing of the bass line to find a better ratio with the bass drum. We do like the vocal sound though. It's not perfect but still pretty natural and the vocals stand in the foreground what is important in terms of the musical hierarchy of course. :) We noticed that the drums have a very small and unnatural sound. It's the snare drum in particular which sounds a bit twisted. You should therefore try to balance the frequency response of the drum signals a bit more. The drums sound a little weak in your mix in total. You can of course give them a little more volume but also the use of compression and a proper amount of low end energy is important to give the rhythm more impact and pressure. You mixed the percussions a bit too penetrant, though. You can lower the volume here to make the drums stand out a bit more in comparison. ;) The lower frequencies are a bit messy and muddy in total. This is of course mainly because of the EQ-ing of bass drum and bass, but you should also try to tidy up the other signals in these areas. Be aware of unpleasant resonances that are overemphasized, try to keep fundamentals, but use EQ-ing to demask the signals. The screenshot below shows the comparison of frequency response. The orange curves show energy over frequency of our mix while the white curves show the frequency response of your version of this song. The upper curve is for peak levels and the lower curve shows the energy over time. Therefore, the lower curve is more meaningful for the comparison. You should lower the volume of our mix by 4 dB as the auditory AB-comparison is only valid on the same loudness level.
